Thinking of ditching the expensive big city you live in for a more affordable small town? Make sure you pick the right small town. Some of those small towns don't come with small prices, per LendingTree, which ranks the most expensive "micropolitan" areas in the US—meaning those locales with a population between 10,000 and 50,000. The New York Times notes that elite vacation spots top the list, including Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, which takes the No. 1 spot in the rankings. The median home value there? Nearly $1 million. Here, the 10 steepest of the bunch, located mostly out West, along with that town's median home value:

  1. Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts; $998,100
  2. Jackson, Wyoming; $847,300
  3. Breckenridge, Colorado; $760,000
  4. Steamboat Springs, Colorado; $691,800
  5. Hailey, Idaho; $534,900
  6. Gardnerville Ranchos, Nevada; $529,600
  7. Hood River, Oregon; $492,500
