It was definitely an interesting morning Friday for No. 1 golf pro Scottie Scheffler, who, in just four hours, went from being arrested to competing in the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. The AP reports that the 27-year-old golfer was released by police shortly after 9am local time and did actually make tee time for the tournament's second round at Valhalla Golf Club, at 10:08am. Scheffler had been taken into custody earlier Friday morning while making his way to the venue for the competition, with cops saying he tried to circumvent a crash scene near the golf club after a pedestrian was fatally hit by a bus.
The tee time was pushed back from its original 8:48am tee time due to the accident. Scheffler, meanwhile, was charged with second-degree felony assault of a police officer, reckless driving, criminal mischief, and disregarding a cop's traffic signals. Upon release, his play didn't seem affected: Scheffler shot 5-under par on Friday and finished his round just two strokes off the lead, per ESPN. In an arrest report, Louisville police say an officer who tried to stop Scheffler from driving through as they worked the scene was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist" after Scheffler's car lurched forward.
On social media, the PGA Championship identified the deceased pedestrian hit by the shuttle bus as a "worker with one of our vendors," calling the accident "heartbreaking." As for Scheffler, he issued his own statement. "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," he says. "It was a very chaotic situation ... and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions." He also offered condolences to the family of the man killed. Scheffler's attorney says the golfer will plead not guilty "and litigate this matter as needed," per CNN.
