Hillary Clinton’s top campaign strategist urged her to paint Barack Obama as un-American, reports the Atlantic in an upcoming article obtained by Politico. Clinton should empahsize that Obama's ties “to basic American values and culture” were "limited," according to a campaign memo. “Does anyone believe that it is possible to win the nomination without raising these issues on him?” asked strategist Mark Penn in the memo.
“Won’t a single tape of Rev. Wright going off on America with Obama sitting there be a game-ender?” The campaign should emphasize Obama's “lack of American roots,” while portraying Clinton as American to the core, Penn suggested. “Let’s explicitly own ‘American’ in our programs, the speeches and the values. He doesn’t,” he wrote. (More Hillary Clinton stories.)
