Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, jailed for a bail violation, may now face a new charge of felony assault. The rap stems from an incident last month when Kilpatrick allegedly shoved a sheriff's deputy who was serving papers on a friend of the mayor, reports the Detroit Free Press. Kilpatrick spent a chastening night in jail on the bail violation—making an unauthorized trip—to become the first sitting mayor of Detroit to be jailed.
He currently faces perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice charges for allegedly lying about thousands of text messages concerning a steamy relationship with an aide. He returns to court today to ask that his bail be reinstated. Michigan's attorney general is expected to announce the new assault charge before the hearing. (More Kwame Kilpatrick stories.)
