Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will spend tonight in jail after an unauthorized business trip across the river to Windsor, Ontario, the AP reports. Kilpatrick violated terms of his bond in a pending perjury case by not asking the court for permission. The mayor apologized to the judge, saying, "I've been living in an incredible state of pressure and scrutiny."
“I have to look at how the system should be run and perceived by the public,” the judge said. A higher court refused to hear an appeal from Kilpatrick’s lawyers until tomorrow morning, sealing the mayor’s fate. With the deputy mayor temporarily running Detroit's water and sewage department, the Free Press adds, Kilpatrick’s chief of staff and chief operating officer will share mayoral duties.
