John McCain probably will let Barack Obama make his vice-presidential pick before he does, Politico reports. GOP strategists hope that by making his announcement after Obama’s convention acceptance speech, McCain will be able to shift media focus toward his own campaign, as well as playing off the Democratic pick. "If they go first, you have more information," says an adviser.
"He’s going to do it when he wants," another insider predicts. Should McCain wait for Obama to make the first move, timing would be crucial. McCain could announce his pick on August 29, the day after the Democratic convention, in a bold attempt to stifle media attention and excitement. Others suggest he hold off until the Republican convention, stalling until after Labor Day. (More John McCain stories.)
