All 9 Teens Who Escaped From Juvie Are Captured

All nine teens who escaped from a juvenile detention center in Pennsylvania on Sunday have been rounded up, reports CNN. The escapees, between the ages of 15 and 17, were captured less than 3 miles from Abraxas Academy in Morgantown. Authorities say they fled amid what has been described as a riot at the facility by overpowering two prison employees and getting their keys. Four turned themselves in by knocking on the door of a house about 6am because they were tired and cold, say police, per the AP. The other five were caught a little later after police received a report of a stolen car and a "sort of pursuit" took place, says a State Police spokesperson.

Authorities in Pennsylvania launched a search Sunday night for nine people who escaped from a juvenile detention facility following a riot, the AP reports. The Reading division of the Pennsylvania State Police and other agencies were searching for nine juveniles who escaped from Abraxas Academy around 8pm, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper David Beohm said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. State and local police were called to take control of the juvenile center in Morgantown, about 49 miles northwest of Philadelphia, after the riot began inside the facility, the Caernarvon Township Police Department said in a statement on its website.

"The escaped juveniles should be wearing gray pants or shorts and a gray shirt," a state police trooper tweeted. "Call 911 if you spot someone matching that description. A perimeter has been established around Abraxas." Abraxas Academy is a secure residential treatment program providing "specialized care for delinquent male youth between the ages of 14 to 18 in 9th grade or above," according to the facility's website. The Pennsylvania State Police did not immediately respond to a message from the AP seeking additional information. Detention facility staffers were reportedly injured during the riot, ABC 6 reports.
