California is suing the EPA for "wantonly" shirking its duty to protect the environment, reports Reuters. The lawsuit is aimed at forcing the agency to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from ships, planes, and industrial equipment, said Attorney General Jerry Brown. He said previous efforts to get the agency to act had been met only with a "pathetically weak" proposal that ignored public health concerns.

"Ships, aircraft, and industrial equipment burn huge quantities of fossil fuel, causing greenhouse gas pollution, yet President  Bush stalls with one bureaucratic dodge after another," said Brown. The suit, California's third against the EPA this year, is expected to be joined by Connecticut, Oregon, New Jersey, and New York City, as well as a coalition of green groups.
