Each passing day seems to bring a new story about how something seemingly innocuous will ruin your health, or else ruin the planet. Not all of it's true, though, insists John Tierney of the New York Times, who lists 10 things it's not worth fussing about.
- Deadly hot dogs. The nitrite scare is over, and saturated fat is bad but not terrible; if anything, sweat the carbs in the bun.
- Air conditioning in cars. The drag from opening your windows will cancel out the fuel you save.
- Fruit flown halfway around the world. Enjoy the kiwi; it's got a smaller carbon footprint than some locally grown produce.
- Cancer-causing cell phones. There's no clinical evidence, and people used to think power lines would kill you, too.
- Plastic bags. Even the EPA admits that paper bags are no better.
