About 25 train cars derailed Sunday in northwestern Montana, with no injuries or evacuations reported, reports the AP. The reason for the lack of evacuations, per USA Today: The cars were either empty or carrying beer, specifically Coors Light and Blue Moon. The cars derailed near the town of Paradise along the Clark Fork River, said Bill Brown, a dispatcher with the Sanders County Sheriff's Office. Firefighters and representatives of Montana Rail Link, which was operating the train, were investigating, he said. Photos posted on social media show some of the cars appearing to dip just into the river. USA Today notes that people were being asked to stay away from the scene, but photos show a number of curious—or perhaps thirsty—gawkers, some in boats and kayaks, and some definitely retrieving the train's spoils.
Montana Rail Link said the cause of the derailment was being investigated. “We are committed to addressing any impacts to the area as a result of this accident, prioritizing the safety of our employees and the public, and understanding the reasons for this incident,” the company said. Montana's senators, Steve Daines and Jon Tester, said they were monitoring the derailment and in touch with local officials. This story has been updated throughout with new details.
