This story has been updated throughout with new details. Jeremy Renner shared a selfie from his hospital bed in an Instagram post Tuesday. "Thanks you all for your kind words," the actor wrote, adding that he was "too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all." At a press conference Tuesday, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam disclosed details of the snow plow accident that critically injured the 51-year-old on New Year's Day, the Guardian reports. Balaam said Renner was hit by his own snow plow while trying to free his vehicle, which was being driven by a family member, from snow near his Tahoe-area home.
Renner "went to retrieve his PistenBully or Sno-Cat—an extremely large piece of snow removal equipment weighing at least 14,330 pounds—in an effort to get his vehicle moving," Balaam said. The sheriff said Renner got out of the Pistenbully to speak to his family member after freeing the vehicle, and "at this point, it was observed that the PistenBully started to roll." The sheriff said Renner was run over as he tried to get in the driver's seat to stop the rolling Pistenbully. "An eyewitness detailed seeing Mr. Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to a rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway," Balaam said, per Variety.
The sheriff said it was a "tragic accident" and there was no sign Renner was impaired at the time. Balaam said 3 feet of fresh snow had fallen in the area and it was difficult for emergency services to get past the many abandoned vehicles on the way to Renner's home. On Monday Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette Journal the actor was assisting a motorist who was stranded in the snow and was hit by his own plow in the course of doing so.
