Three people are dead and two others injured after a campus shooting Sunday night at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, reports the local Daily Progress. Police say the suspected gunman is still at large, and they have identified him as 22-year-old student Christopher Darnell Jones. Jones was on the roster of the school's football team in 2018, and is described as a former high school athletic and academic standout at Varina High School in Petersburg, notes the Daily Progress. The victims have not been identified, reports the Washington Post.

“As of this writing, I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care,” UVa President James E. Ryan wrote in a message about 4am. “We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional detail as soon as we are able." Students remain under shelter-in-place orders, and classes are canceled, per the Cavalier Daily campus newspaper.

Gunfire was reported about 10:40pm at or near a parking garage about a mile and half from the school's famed campus rotunda. The Daily Progress notes that the garage is behind a building where the university marching band practices. An active manhunt was underway on campus and in surrounding Charlottesville. “The second we all got that message that there was an active shooter, my phone flooded with messages,” says Eva Surovell, editor-in-chief of the Cavalier Daily. “People are genuinely scared.” (More campus shooting stories.)
