Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin says he has sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a personal note to apologize for remarks he made about the Oct. 28 attack on her husband. "There’s no room for violence anywhere, but we’re going to send her back to be with him in California," the Republican governor told a rally for House candidate Yesli Vega on the day of the attack on Paul Pelosi, USA Today reports. The 82-year-old suffered a skull fracture and other injuries in the attack at his home in San Francisco. Police said the attacker broke into the home around 2am. Youngkin was widely criticized for the remarks but he initially resisted apologizing, reports the Washington Post.

"My full intention on my comments was to categorically state that violence and the kind of violence that was perpetrated against Speaker Pelosi’s husband is not just unacceptable, it’s atrocious," Youngkin said in a statement Wednesday, per CBS. "And I didn’t do a great job with that. And so listen, it was a personal note and it was one between me and the speaker, just to reflect those sentiments." A Pelosi spokesman said she had received the handwritten letter, which was postmarked Nov. 1, and had accepted the apology. Youngkin is far from the only Republican to have made insensitive remarks about the attack. Fox News reports that at an election night party for Arizona Republicans Tuesday, there was laughter when Rep. Andy Biggs joked about the House speaker "losing the gavel but finding the hammer."
