Nobody expected one of election night's biggest races—Democrat John Fetterman vs. Republican Mehmet Oz for the Senate in Pennsylvania—to be called early, given how close the polls had been. The stakes are huge, of course, with control of the Senate potentially in the balance. About the only thing known for sure early on was that voter turnout was high in the state Tuesday, per CBS News. Within hours of polls closing, however, several media outlets had projected Fetterman as the winner. Among them: NBC News, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and the New York Times. The Associated Press was still holding out after 1am Wednesday, but called the race for Fetterman shortly thereafter.
Fetterman claimed victory in a Pennsylvania speech as well as on Twitter. The race shorthand: Fetterman suffered a stroke in May, and Oz has accused him of being cagey about the full health repercussions. (Their lone debate didn't help Fetterman on this front.) For his part, Fetterman has mocked Oz as a TV doctor out of touch with everyday citizens and as someone who has spent far more of his life in neighboring New Jersey, per the AP.
