Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, did not have anything nice to say when it came to John Fetterman, President Biden, and their respective speaking abilities. During an interview with syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt, the subject of Biden's plans to appear at a campaign event Friday for Fetterman and other Pennsylvania Democrats came up. Vice President Kamala Harris will appear as well, and Hewitt's take on it was, "No one wants them except a doomed campaign." Referring to Fetterman as well as the president and VP, he continued, "I hope there are cameras and microphones, because you put those three together and they could say anything, Ronna." That's when McDaniel's mocking began, the Washington Post reports.
"Well, maybe they can get a full sentence out," she said, an apparent reference to Fetterman's auditory processing struggles since having a stroke and Biden's history of having a stutter. She then suggested that Fetterman must have drawn "the short straw" of all the 2022 Democratic candidates and been forced to campaign with Biden, adding, "So Biden said, ‘Between the two of us, we may be able to finish a full sentence.'" The comments came as Democrats are "handwringing," as Politico puts it, over Fetterman's performance in his debate with Dr. Mehmet Oz Tuesday. With Fetterman's initial lead in the polls shrinking to the point that the Senate race is now a toss-up, some are even wondering whether Fetterman should have exited the race after his stroke. "I feel bad saying this, but if he does go on to lose by a very close margin, and then we lose the Senate 51-49 ... that decision will really be reexamined," says one official.
