Police in New York City are trying to figure out who assaulted comedian Chris Redd outside a Greenwich Village comedy club Wednesday night. The 37-year-old was punched in the face and ended up in Bellevue Hospital but will be OK, reports TMZ. He appeared to be bleeding profusely from the nose, per ABC7. Police say Redd—best known for his stint on Saturday Night Live from 2017 through last season—was assaulted by a man as he exited a vehicle in front of the Comedy Cellar about 9:40pm.
The assailant, who appeared to be dressed like a security guard, punched Redd in the face and fled the scene, say police, who have not identified a suspect or spoken of a motive. Redd had been scheduled to perform at the comedy club that night. While on SNL, Redd played figures including Kanye West and Cory Booker, notes People. He also has a comedy special scheduled to air on HBO Max next month. Redd was in the gossip headlines last month when it emerged that he has begun dating the estranged wife of longtime SNL star Kenan Thompson, though TMZ described that as a "no hard feelings" situation among the celebs.
