Some 37 years after the release of Back to the Future—and seven years after the future depicted in Back to the Future II—Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd had an emotional reunion in front of fans at the New York City Comic Con on Sunday. One video of the pair embracing has been viewed more than 7 million times on Twitter, with fans calling it a "beautiful moment," Variety reports. During a panel discussion that followed, Fox, 61, and Lloyd, 83, talked about the making of the trilogy and their friendship in the decades afterward. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, when he was 29, said Lloyd had always been there for him.
"Parkinson’s is the gift that keeps on taking—but it’s a gift, and I wouldn’t change it for anything," said Fox, whose foundation has funded more than $1 billion in research. “People like Chris have been there a lot for me, and so many of you have. It’s not about what I have, it’s about what I’ve been given—the voice to get this done, and help people out." Lloyd looked back at the "immediate chemistry" when director Robert Zemeckis replaced Eric Stoltz with Fox as Marty McFly six weeks after filming began, People reports. Fox said that to act alongside Lloyd, "all I had to do was react. ... That was the whole thing: be with Chris and let it be Chris, and enjoy it," he said.
Fox also shared some sad news at the event, telling the audience that his mother, Phyllis, had died two weeks earlier at 92 years old. "To this day—well, till two weeks ago—my mother thought it was a really bad idea for me to do Back to the Future," Fox said. He joked that while she loved the movie, her prediction that making the movie while he was also starring in Family Ties on TV would make him "too tired" was correct. CNN reports that Fox will be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' Governors Awards next month. (More Michael J. Fox stories.)
