Protesters Answer Iran's President

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi addressed faculty and students at Alzahra University in Tehran on Saturday, condemning the protests that have followed the death in custody of a woman arrested for violating the Islamic dress code. As demonstrations were held in multiple places across the country, President Ebrahim Raisi read a poem on campus likening the protesters he described as "rioters" to flies. In response, female students shouted "Raisi get lost" and "Mullahs get lost," videos posted on social media appeared to show, per Reuters. It wasn't clear whether Raisi was there for the chanting.

In two cities, government security forces shot at protesters and used tear gas on them, per CNN. At least two people were killed, one man sitting in his car in Sanandaj and a protester who was shot in the abdomen by officers. The Iranian human rights group Hengaw reported that security forces killed the driver after he honked his car's horn in support of the protest. Two teachers were injured, per Hengaw. In some places, workers went on strike, per AFP. The government on Friday had announced that Mahsa Amini died of a longstanding illness, though her family said the 22-year-old had been healthy.

In Saqez, Amini's hometown, schoolgirls chanted "Woman, life, freedom" as they marched Saturday, swinging headscarves above them, Hengaw videos showed. A large banner on an overpass in Tehran read: "We are not afraid anymore. We will fight." In his speech, Raisi repeated that foreign enemies are behind the protests, per the AP.
