A Colorado man is recuperating after a bear attacked him at his home over the weekend—the second such attack in his town since late August. Per a release from Colorado Parks & Wildlife cited by KKTV, the New Castle resident heard noises coming from his backyard around 10:30pm Saturday, and when he went outside to check it out, he spooked a bear there, which in turn lunged at him and knocked him down. CPW officials say the man tried to cover his face with one hand as he reached for his gun with the other hand, managing to fire off three shots and frighten the bear into fleeing.
A family member took the victim to a local hospital, where he was treated for injuries to his hand and arm, as well as for bruises on his chest from the pressure of the bear on top of him. The man, who said he'd seen the bear creeping around in his yard the previous two nights, was released Sunday and is continuing to recover at home. CPW officers, meanwhile, are still looking for the bear, which may be injured, as the man isn't sure if he hit the bear when he shot at it.
The Denver Post reports this is the second such attack in New Castle in two months, after a woman at the end of August went to replace a cover over the hot tub in her backyard, where a sow and her three cubs were hidden in trees. One of the bears attacked her, leaving her with a serious laceration and multiple scratches. The sow and one cub were euthanized, while the other two cubs were transported to a rehab site. "This is an unfortunate reminder that we need to be vigilant and 'bear aware' at all times," said CPW Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham after the latest incident, per the release.
