5 High School Football Players Shot After Scrimmage, 1 Fatally

As five high school football players were walking off the field after a scrimmage against two other teams Tuesday afternoon, police say they were ambushed by two gunmen behind a high school in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, neighborhood. A 14-year-old boy was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, and four others ranging in age from 14 to 17 were injured, NBC Philadelphia reports. The gunmen fired at least 70 times as the group walked behind Roxborough High School a few minutes after the scrimmage ended. The boy who was killed was on the Roxborough football team but attended Saul High School, a nearby magnet school focusing on agricultural sciences that has a football co-op arrangement with Roxborough.

The gunmen fired from a light green Ford Explorer, ABC 6 Philadelphia reports. No arrests had been made by Tuesday night. All the other victims, who also play on the Roxborough team, are expected to recover. "I was at work and got a call from my stepmom saying my little brother got shot. I rushed down here as fast as I can," the older brother of a victim who is expected to survive recalled. "My little brother is 14, and just hearing him getting shot is the worst feeling in the world." (More Philadelphia stories.)
