After three years as an official branch of the US Armed Forces, the US Space Force now has ... an official anthem. It’s called “Semper Supra,” Latin for “Always Above,” the USSF motto. You can listen via NBC, but know that, as Military.com tactfully says, "it's not a banger." Washington Post classical music critic Michael Andor Brodeur says the song “sounds a lot like a military anthem,” and he was hoping for something “spacier.” Brodeur also points out that Space Force remains a laughing matter in many quarters, in part because its “sudden and ham-handed public rollout in 2019 was largely entrusted to the writers’ rooms of late-night shows.”
According to the Space Force News, the song was created by Air Force vet and military vocalist James Teachenor, along with Sean Nelson, a Coast Guard trombonist specializing in musical arrangement. USSF Gen. John Raymond said the song “will be part of our culture and heritage for years to come,” and “I will be proud to sing 'Semper Supra' alongside my fellow Guardians.” Unlike composers of storied anthems like the "Marines' Hymn" and "Wild Blue Yonder," the USSF songwriters did not have a storied tradition of battle glory to build on, at least not at first glance. However, space has played a role in US military operations for decades, and satellites are vital on the modern battlefield.
