Duke Settles With Lacrosse Players
Former Duke lacrosse players Dave Evans, left, and Reade Seligmann talk following Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong's North Carolina State Bar trial in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday, June 16, 2007. Nifong will be disbarred for his disastrous prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players...   (Associated Press)

Duke University has reached a settlement with the three lacrosse players falsely accused of rape last year. Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and Dave Evans, who were suspended last year, will receive an undisclosed amount from the university, which admitted with surprising directness that the deal is intended to close the door on future lawsuits.

The announcement comes just two days after an ethics committee disbarred former Durham DA Mike Nifong for his role in the prosecuting the students. The three players are likely to file a civil suit against Nfiong, who said today he would leave office July 13. (More Duke rape case stories.)
