Superman has been around for over 80 years, but DC Comics has decided it's never too late for a little facelift. While the superhero has seen many changes to his look over the decades, one motto has been most intimately associated with the character. Per the Hollywood Reporter, superman will no longer stand for "Truth, justice, and the American way," as he has, off and on, since the 1940s. Instead, his tagline will be “Truth, justice and a better tomorrow." DC Comics called the move "a nod to the past and an eye toward the future." As Variety notes, the motto originated from radio serial as a way to cheer on American efforts in WWII.
In DC Comics' blog DC Fandome, DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee said the change will better reflect the global storylines. “Superman has long been a symbol of hope who inspires people from around the world, and it is that optimism and hope that powers him forward with this new mission statement," Lee said. Per the blog, the new motto will be featured across all mediums including comic books, film, TV, video games and more. News of the change came just days after it was revealed the new Superman, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is bisexual and will become romantically involved with a male reporter in an upcoming comic.
