The deep V-neck T-shirt, that "misguided ode to the male sternum," has taken the classic, plain, white version to a place so fashion forward many are hoping it gets lost there, Kate Radway writes in Radar. "I see them on the street and I am almost sick of it," says a rep for American Apparel, identified as the key trend culprit.
Perhaps, one analyst says, the deep V lets men make the statement, "I'm a little cooler … a little more fashion forward … I've taken the next step." Demurs Radway, "Donning a deep V-neck T-shirt to a summer party may scream 'sexy and confident' to the fashion elite, but to others it simply bellows, 'Look at me and my chest hair!'"
