The last time Elizabeth Toledo saw her 13-year-old son, Adam, on Sunday, they attended a memorial service for a relative who had died. That night, she says, he snuck out, something he sometimes did while she slept. She reported him missing when he didn't return—and found out this week that he'd been fatally shot by Chicago police in the wee hours of Monday. Now she's seeking answers, ABC 7 reports. Police say they responded to an alley in the Little Village neighborhood after a ShotSpotter alert around 2:35am and found two males, one of whom was armed and ran from police. An officer shot Toledo in the chest in what police describe as an "armed confrontation," and he died at the scene, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
A gun was found at the scene, which was less than a mile from Toledo's home, police say. The second person, 21-year-old Ruben Roman Jr., was arrested and charged with resisting arrest. Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the police superintendent, activists, and locals all want the bodycam video that captured the shooting released. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability says that while it is prohibited from releasing bodycam video if a police shooting victim is under 18 without a court order, it is exploring possible avenues to release the video, and that it will allow Toledo's family to review it. All other evidence will be released within 60 days. The officer involved is on desk duty for 30 days while COPA investigates the incident. (More Chicago stories.)
