A shooting in a Colorado supermarket Monday afternoon left 10 people dead, including a police officer. A suspect was in custody, Boulder officials said, and was being treated at a hospital for his injuries. At a brief press conference Monday evening, police Cmdr. Kerry Yamaguchi would not provide details about the shooting, the AP reports, though he said the suspect is the only person wounded. The police chief announced the death toll Monday night, per the Denver Post. A shirtless man with blood running down his leg was escorted out of the store in handcuffs by two officers, a live TV feed showed. Two roommates were buying pizza at a counter in the King Soopers when they saw the killer walk into the store. He didn't say anything, one said. "He just came in and started shooting." His roommate said the man "let off a couple of shots, then was silent, and then he let off a couple more. He wasn’t spraying."
A man who said he was shopping at the time told KCNC-TV that he heard a loud bang, then heard another, and by the third, everyone was running. He said they ran to the back of the store, found the employee area, and workers told them how to escape. He said they walked single file, with their arms on the backs of those in front of them. Officers helped some people out of the store to safety. Another witness described a stampede. Sarah Moonshadow and her son, Nicolas Edwards, had just paid for strawberries when they heard two shots, per the Boulder Daily Camera. "We just ran," she said. As they ran, they felt the concussions of more shots, per the Post. They saw a body lying in the parking lot, and Moonshadow started to go to it when her son said: "No, Mom! We can’t do anything." Edwards later said: "I knew we couldn’t do anything for the guy. We had to go." (More Colorado stories.)
