Different continent, familiar result. President Trump's news conference in India on Tuesday featured a one-on-one spat with Jim Acosta of CNN, reports Mediaite. The two have sparred before, and Acosta even once temporarily lost his White House press pass. On Tuesday, Acosta asked Trump if he would pledge that he wouldn't accept assistance from a foreign country in the 2020 election. "First of all, I want no help from any country," Trump said, "and I haven't been given help from any country, and if you see what CNN, your wonderful network, said, I guess they apologized in a way for—didn't they apologize for the fact that they said certain things that weren't true? Tell me, what was their apology yesterday? What did they say?"
The Hill thinks Trump was referring to a report that Russia was meddling in the election to help Trump, a report that CNN and other outlets later walked back somewhat. Trump's comments led to this back-and-forth. (Watch it here.)
- Acosta: "Mr. President, I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better than yours sometimes, if you don't mind me saying."
- Trump: "Let me tell you about your record, your record is so bad you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You have the worst record in the history of broadcasting."
- Acosta: "I'm not ashamed of anything and our organization is not ashamed."
Those following the pair's history shouldn't be surprised. Back in 2017,
Politico described Acosta as "the chief antagonist for a network that styles itself as Trump's chief antagonist." (More
