President Trump told thousands of anti-abortion marchers Friday that he's their champion, and they agreed—breaking into chants of "four more years" after his speech on the National Mall. "Unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House," he said, USA Today reports. Trump is the first president to attend the "March for Life" in its 47 years. The theme this year is "Life Empower: Pro-life is Pro-Woman," and Trump recognized the political power of women in his speech, saying they are "using their votes" in their efforts against abortion. The same day, his administration threatened to cut health care funding to California because it makes insurance plans cover abortions, per NBC News.
Trump, who said in 1999 that he was "very pro-choice," listed other steps he's taken against access to abortion. He included nominating two Supreme Court justices with track records of ruling against access, per Politico; the march ends each year at the Supreme Court Building. As he does at campaign rallies, Trump covered other issues and criticized Democrats. "They are coming after me because I am fighting for you," he told the crowd. A Democratic state legislator from Louisiana who was invited to speak said she still disagrees with Trump's policies and dislikes his insults of other people. But she was glad to see him attend the event, per the Washington Post. Still, "it doesn't make him the face of it. It sets a precedent for future presidents to speak," Katrina Jackson said before her speech. "It's my prayer the president’s attendance doesn't make it look partisan." (More March for Life stories.)
