An American woman vacationing in Belize has been reported missing after going on an overnight side trip to a small island. When members of the tour group awoke about 6am Saturday, Alison MacKenzie, 43, was no longer with them, ABC News reports. More than a dozen people, including MacKenzie's 58-year-old male companion, took the catamaran trip to Rendezvous Caye, an island about 20 miles off the coast of Belize that's no more than 2 acres in size, per People. MacKenzie has two children and lives in Arizona.
The US State Department said it is working with local officials in the investigation. Officials said Tuesday night that no one has been held for questioning and no one has been named a person of interest. "We are getting nowhere finding out where she is," MacKenzie's mother, Cherie MacKenzie, posted Sunday on Facebook. She said that the family is working with police, the tour company and the US embassy, but that "We have received 3 different stories about what happened that morning." The family is worried that Alison MacKenzie is dead. "Her two daughters are past being consoled," Cherie MacKenzie posted. "They have lost their mother and best friend." (More missing person stories.)
