On the first day of President Trump's impeachment trial, Republican senators stymied Democrats' attempts to bring additional evidence and witnesses, but on the witness topic, Trump says he actually wants to see those like chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton brought in to testify. The president talked about that preference at what the AP calls a "surprise" presser Wednesday after the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, although he insisted the impeachment in general was "a hoax" and "so bad for our country." "Personally, I'd rather go the long route," he said on the witness question, though he noted that "national security" had to be kept in mind regarding any testimony. "I'll leave that to the Senate. The Senate is going to have to answer that."
He went on to praise his defense team, noting they've been doing a "very good job," and blasted the Democratic impeachment managers, saying he'd like to go "sit right in the front row and stare at their corrupt faces," except he doesn't think his attorneys would want him to do so. The president also talked about the US economy and what he called the "blue-collar boom" that's been driving it, the Wall Street Journal reports. "The American dream is back, bigger, better, and stronger than ever before," he said, ticking off such accomplishments as the low unemployment rate and foreign investment. "No one is benefiting more than America's middle class." UBS Chair Axel Weber called Trump's talk "a typical sales pitch of the CEO in Davos overselling the company's achievements and underreporting on some of the risks." Trump added that he still plans on giving his State of the Union address on Feb. 4. (More Davos stories.)
