Billie Eilish isn't done making history. The youngest person to be nominated in the four main Grammy categories in a single year, also the youngest to be named Billboard's Woman of the Year, is now the youngest artist in history to write and record a James Bond theme song, per the Los Angeles Times. "I'm still in shock … It feels crazy to be a part of this in every way," the 18-year-old is quoted as saying in a tweet from the official 007 account, which noted she co-wrote the theme song for No Time to Die with her brother and songwriting partner, Finneas O’Connell. "To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honor," adds the "Bad Guy" singer. "James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist."
Writing at the Guardian, Stuart Heritage believes "we could really have something special on our hands." But he also worries that Eilish—following in the footsteps of Adele and Sam Smith—might be "too cool" for "one of the dustiest film franchises around." While the "creaky old antique of a franchise" has produced "a smattering of fantastic outliers … that have flourished precisely because they haven’t hewed to the ossified blueprint of what constitutes a Bond theme," it has to evolve slowly, he writes. In that sense, "Eilish's minimalistic brand of clicks and whooshes might be good by itself, but there's a real risk it'll be like painting Pikachu on a Chippendale when it's set to the hoary old pervert psychedelia of the film's opening titles."
