We already know what books Barack Obama enjoyed over the past 12 months—now he's filling us in on the movies and TV shows he's been obsessed with, too. No. 44 posted his top picks of 2019 Sunday afternoon, noting on Instagram, "This year's list includes everything from explorations of class dynamics and relationships, to an inspired reboot of a classic graphic novel, to a portal back to one of the most special places in history—an Aretha Franklin concert." He concentrated mostly on the movies, though he did single out three TV shows: Watchmen, Unbelievable, and the second season of Fleabag (which is getting attention on Twitter because the first season features a scene where the main character gets, ahem, excited by an Obama speech, notes Jezebel). The movies, in alphabetical order:
- American Factory
- Amazing Grace
- Apollo 11
- Ash Is Purest White
- Atlantics
- Birds of Passage
- Booksmart
- Diane
- The Farewell
- Ford v Ferrari
- The Irishman
- Just Mercy
- The Last Black Man in San Francisco
- Little Women
- Marriage Story
- Parasite
- The Souvenir
- Transit
Obama noted that
American Factory comes from his Higher Ground production company. Per
People, some of the players involved with Obama's favorites were thrilled to get the former president's endorsement. "OH MY GOD" read a
tweet from Olivia Wilde, who directed
Booksmart. (And don't forget to skim his
favorite books list.)
