Michael Moore isn't happy about it, but he says that if the presidential election were held now, Donald Trump would win again—the same way. The Michigan filmmaker said Trump would lose the popular vote but win the Electoral College, as he did in 2016, Fox News reports. The Midwestern states Trump won still back him, Moore said. "If the vote were today, I believe, he would win the electoral states that he would need, because, living out there, I will tell you," Moore said. "His level of support has not gone down one inch. In fact, I'd say it's even more rabid than it was before — because they're afraid now. They're afraid he could lose." Moore made the comments in an interview with Democracy Now.
Moore sees reason for Democratic optimism, but he has a warning for the party. He expects the Democratic nominee to win the popular vote by a greater margin than Hillary Clinton did in 2016. But the party will go wrong if it picks another moderate like Clinton, whom he describes as "Republican Lite," or Joe Biden. With so many women, people of color and young adults among the voters, Moore said, moderation isn't the ticket, per the Hill. Those voters doomed Clinton, he said, while sending the party a message: "'You forgot us a long time ago out here, and we will not put up with this anymore. We're not going to vote for Trump, but we're not going to tolerate you sending us another Republican-lite Democrat.'" Moore has endorsed Bernie Sanders. (More Michael Moore stories.)
