Charges have been filed against the US diplomat's wife involved in a car crash that killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn in the UK. But whether 42-year-old Anne Sacoolas will ever return to Britain to face trial remains very much up in the air. The Crown Prosecution Service says extradition proceedings are underway to have Sacoolas face charges of dangerous driving causing death, reports the BBC. However, the final decision on whether to extradite will rest with Britain's Home Office, notes the New York Times. The US State Department, meanwhile, has insisted that Sacoolas has immunity from prosecution and said the decision to charge is "not a helpful development." Sacoolas was allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road when her car collided on Aug. 27 with Dunn's motorcycle outside Royal Air Force station Croughton, where Sacoolas' husband worked.
"We've got what we wanted," Dunn's father, Tim Dunn, tells Sky News. "It means everything," adds Dunn's mother, Charlotte Charles, who said she would "never have been able to rest properly" without fulfilling a promise to seek justice, made to her son on the night he died. Interviewed by Northamptonshire Police at the time of the Aug. 27 crash, Sacoolas later left the UK under diplomatic immunity, though she agreed to be interviewed in the US in October, shortly after Dunn's parents met with President Trump. Sacoolas went to the White House that day, too, but Dunn's parents declined to meet with her. The Guardian, meanwhile, digs in to the particulars of the immunity question.
