The building where Adolf Hitler came into this world will not become a shrine to Nazism, authorities in Austria have vowed. Officials say the 500-year-old house in Braunau am Inn, which the government expropriated after a lengthy legal battle, is going to become a police station, the BBC reports. The dictator's parents lived in the town in connection with his father's job at the nearby border with Germany, though they moved to a different building a few weeks after Hitler was born. Residents say far-right extremists have been traveling to the town to have their pictures taken in front of the building, which was most recently used as a center for disabled people.

"The future use of the building by police will be an unmistakable signal that this building shall never serve to commemorate National Socialism," Interior Minister Wolfgang Peschorn said Tuesday. Deutsche Welle reports that the government is holding a Europe-wide architectural competition to redesign the building's facade before it reopens. The building's former owner, who refused to sell it to the government, was paid $897,000 after it was seized under a compulsory purchase order. (Austria initially planned to tear the building down.)
