If you're traveling, the tristate area around the Big Apple may be the last place you want to fly in and out of. The Wall Street Journal took a look at America's 20 biggest airports, as well as the 20 largest airports after that (what the Journal deems "medium-sized"), looking at such factors as convenience (which includes everything from WiFi speed to how much walking visitors need to do); reliability (e.g., arrival delays, canceled flights, and TSA wait times); and value, including average fares and parking costs. The New York area's three major airports all fell at the bottom of the rankings. "We know we have a very, very long way to go," says Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is handling a $24 billion revamp at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports. Here, the five best large airports and their corresponding airport codes:

  1. Phoenix (PHX)
  2. Denver (DEN)
  3. Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  4. Detroit Metro (DTW)
  5. Orlando (MCO)
The five worst large airports:
  1. Newark (EWR)
  2. New York JFK (JFK)
  3. Philadelphia (PHL)
  4. Miami (MIA)
  5. Chicago O'Hare (ORD)

  3. Washington Dulles (IAD)
  4. New Orleans (MSY)
  5. St. Louis (STL)
