Trump: I'm Too Busy to Watch 'Witch Hunt'

President Trump met with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan Wednesday, and took time during their Oval Office meeting to slam another big event going on in DC simultaneously: the first day of public impeachment hearings. "I’m too busy to watch it. It’s a witch hunt, it’s a hoax, I’m too busy to watch it. So, I’m sure I’ll get a report," he told reporters, per the Hill. "There’s nothing—I have not been briefed. There’s nothing there. I see they’re using lawyers that are television lawyers, they took some guys off television. You know. I’m not surprised to see it, because [House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam] Schiff can’t do his own questions."

The POTUS and Erdogan planned a press conference later Wednesday. The AP notes that the meeting comes as US-Turkey relations "are at their lowest point in decades," thanks to Turkey's attacks on Kurdish civilians in Syria and its increasingly close ties to Russia, including recently purchasing a Russian air defense system. Some lawmakers also accuse Erdogan of using repressive tactics on his constituents and say he shouldn't even have been invited to the White House. But Trump says Turkey is an important ally, and noted prior to the Oval Office meeting that the two countries are poised to expand trade to as much as $100 billion. Kurds and Kurdish supporters were outside the White House protesting the meeting Wednesday. (More Trump impeachment stories.)
