Jacksonville mother Brianna Williams told police Wednesday that she had woken up that morning to find her 5-year-old daughter gone and her home's back door unlocked. Police say they no longer believe Williams was telling the truth when she said she last saw Taylor Rose Williams around midnight Wednesday morning—and the little girl is still missing. As the search continued Thursday, Sheriff Mike Williams said Williams, a 27-year-old US Navy petty officer, stopped cooperating with investigators after they asked her about discrepancies in her story, the, Florida Times-Union reports. He says it is now no longer clear when Taylor was last seen, and police would like anybody who saw the mother and daughter together in the last six months to get in touch.
"We won’t take the steps to say she is a suspect, but we do know that her daughter is missing and she was the last person to see her," the sheriff said of Williams. "We do not believe the daughter walked away." Williams moved to the home in the Brentwood neighborhood last Sunday and neighbors say they never saw a little girl, First Coast News reports. The search for the girl, which involved more than 120 officers from state, local, and federal agencies, shifted Thursday to the Southside neighborhood Williams moved from. Taylor is described as being 3 feet tall and weighing 50 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. The sheriff says investigators still hope to find the girl alive. (More Florida stories.)
