Lorde has been working on her third studio album, but fans they may have to wait a little longer than expected. BuzzFeed reports that over the weekend, the 22-year-old singer sent a message to her newsletter subscribers, revealing the reason for the delay: the death of her dog, Pearl, who Pitchfork notes was brought home by Lorde in 2018. In the announcement, Lorde says working on new songs at home in New Zealand had been going "pretty well," and that Pearl's presence in her life had been inspirational. "I was receiving huge amounts of energy I can only describe as divine, and I was working to communicate it all to you by way of the album," she writes. Pearl had had health issues for much of his life, Lorde explains, but then, tragedy: "One day we woke up and I knew, in that way mothers do, that he was sicker than we had realized."
Lorde says her beloved pet had two cardiac arrests in one hour, and died after the second one. "I was holding him when he went, and I know he knew that I was there," she writes, adding that "the bright energy I was trying to communicate to you has gone, for now. ... I felt he led me towards the ideas." She asks for fans' patience before signing her note "Ella," her real first name. Paper magazine rounds up fan reaction to the news, which brought out videos and GIFs of distress, and an outpouring of sympathy. "This isn't a time for joking around or saying 'Where's the album,' it's time to support the one person who has helped us throughout our lives with only 2 albums," one commenter wrote.
