If President Trump is impeached, the umpire apparently will not strike back. Major League Baseball umpire Rob Drake has apologized for a tweet in which he said he was ready to pick up an assault rifle "because if you impeach MY PRESIDENT this way, YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER CIVAL WAR," CNN reports. Drake, who has been an MLB ump for 20 years, said in a statement that he apologizes to "everyone that my words made feel less safe," and for the "controversy this has brought to Major League Baseball, my fellow umpires, and my family." "I never intended to diminish the threat of violence from assault weapons, or violence of any kind," Drake said, adding: "I'm going to learn from this."
The 50-year-old, who has now deactivated his Twitter account, said he deleted the tweet as soon as he realized the "violence in those words." MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday that the league is investigating the tweet. The MLB Umpires Association defended Drake Thursday, calling him a "passionate individual and an outstanding umpire" who "chose the wrong way to convey his opinion about our great country," ESPN reports.
