South Park was quick to respond to LeBron James' controversial China comments. In an episode Wednesday titled "Let Them Eat Goo," some students at South Park Elementary School complain about the school lunches, so the cafeteria starts serving healthier options. Cartman is not happy, and after one of the students who complained about the original lunches says they have freedom of speech and are allowed to protest, Cartman responds, per Deadline: "We all talk about freedom of speech. Yes, we do have freedom of speech, but at times there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you are not thinking about others and only thinking about yourself!" As the Hollywood Reporter points out, those are James' exact words. The episode also made reference to James when Cartman referenced "taco Tuesday," something James often does on his social media feeds.
For those unfamiliar with James' comments, he was talking about Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, whose tweet in support of Hong Kong protesters set off a firestorm within the NBA. The league immediately distanced itself from Morey's comments and was accused of kowtowing to China to protect its financial ties to the country, and James was seen as siding with the league in his response. (Some had noted that with his own close financial ties to China, it would be difficult for James to support Morey's comments.) South Park has poked fun at James' China ties in the past (showing him on a plane to China in one episode), and just two weeks ago it delivered an episode so disparaging of China that China wiped South Park off its internet. Then, in last week's episode, the show once again slammed China. South Park tweeted the Cartman/James quote Wednesday night, garnering thousands of likes and retweets. (More South Park stories.)
