A San Diego Padres pitcher tried to crawl through a doggy door into the bedroom of an Arizona couple, who responded with a Taser when they couldn't grab their gun, police say. A woman called police around 3:30am Sunday, saying her husband had discovered a man crawling through the doggy door of their home in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria. A police report notes the husband told his wife to grab his handgun but, unable to retrieve it, she instead handed him a Taser. The 6-foot-4 Jacob Nix had by then retreated out of the hole, leaving his phone behind, police say, per CNN and Fox News. Still, the husband leaned out the doggy door and fired the Taser, hitting Nix as he ran away with another man, who'd tried to pull him out of the home, police say. The husband had also managed to kick Nix in the face.
Nix and Thomas Cosgrove—a minor league pitcher with the Padres' Advanced A affiliate, Lake Elsinore Storm—were arrested several miles away. After explaining they'd been dropped at the residence by a rideshare service, Nix reportedly said he'd thought he lived at the home, though he does not have a doggy door. "This is my fault, I can't blame alcohol but I was inebriated," CNN quotes the pitcher as saying. Both men, aged 23, bonded out of jail on Sunday. Cosgrove, who paid a $50 bond, is charged with one count of criminal trespassing. Nix, who posted $100, is charged with two counts: one for entering the home and one for entering the backyard, police say. In a Thursday statement, his team said it was in contact with authorities and treating the matter "seriously." (More MLB stories.)
