Doctors found out why Nicole Gordon suffered from severe headaches: She had a bullet lodged in her skull. Now her ex-boyfriend, Jerrontae Cain, has been sentenced to 25 years in Georgia after shooting her and not telling her about it, CNN reports. The Fulton County District Attorney's office says Gordon and Cain were arguing in her car in 2017 when the window smashed and she went unconscious. Cain took her to his mother's house to recover, and she figured she'd been cut by shards of glass. But her terrible headaches, memory loss, and trouble walking led a friend to take her to Atlanta Medical Center—where doctors discovered the bullet and said it had to stay there because removing it might be fatal.
Cain told police Gordon had crashed her car into a tree, but the crime scene proved otherwise. "And doctors determined that the injuries Gordon suffered were consistent with being shot in the head," said Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police issued a warrant for Cain and found him in January 2019 in a South Fulton home, where he hid in the attic for two hours before surrendering. Cain, 39, was sentenced Thursday to 25 years on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Cain had been arrested 13 times before and convicted of sexual battery. Friends of Gordon, now 42, say he had given her black eyes "on several occasions" before the shooting. (More shooting stories.)
