Former Scientologist Leah Remini says it took her a month to find out that her estranged father had died—and she blames the organization for destroying her relationship with him. In an Instagram post, the outspoken Scientology critic says she and her sister Nicole didn't know about George Remini's death until Nicole was contacted by a stranger offering condolences, People reports. "We weren't aware that he had been sick leading up to his death," Remini wrote. "A funeral came and went and none of us knew anything about it. We were not able to say goodbye." Remini, who was a member of Scientology for more than 30 years, left the organization in 2013. The 49-year-old actress created the "Scientology and the Aftermath" documentary series, which concluded last month.
George Remini criticized his daughter in videos released by Scientology after the series began. "I'm angry that the last chapter in our relationship was dictated by Scientology. Scientology took my dad in as a pawn against me," Leah Remini said in her Instagram post. "The little girls inside of my sisters and me will never forgive Scientology for taking away our last chance to have the one thing we always wanted from our father," she said. "And that was for him to say 'I'm sorry and I loved you.'" Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw fired back in a statement to the New York Daily News, calling Leah Remini "beyond hypocritical" and saying George Remini was never a member of the organization.
