Actress Felicity Huffman is going to federal prison for her role in the college entrance cheating scandal, though not for very long. A judge in Boston on Friday sentenced the 56-year-old to 14 days behind bars, along with a $30,000 fine and 250 hours of community service. She must report to prison on Oct. 25, though it is not yet known where she will be incarcerated. The actress previously pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to falsify her older daughter's SAT scores. CNN reports that Huffman broke down while addressing the judge. “I am deeply ashamed of what I have done,” Huffman said in court. “At the end of the day I had a choice to make. I could have said 'no.'” Huffman, who apologized to the judge and to her own family, arrived at court Friday with husband and fellow actor William Macy, per the AP. He has not been charged in the case.
"You can rebuild your life after this," said judge Indira Talwani. "You’ve paid your dues." In handing out the sentence, Talwani said Huffman knew what she was doing constituted fraud. Prior to sentencing, prosecutor Eric Rosen said there was "no excuse" for what Huffman did. "Most parents have the moral compass and integrity not to step over the line," he said. "The defendant did not." Last week, in a letter to the judge, Huffman wrote that “as warped as this sounds now, I honestly began to feel that maybe I would be a bad mother if I didn’t do what Mr. Singer was suggesting.” Singer is the "college counselor" she paid to rig the system. Another big name caught up in the mess: Lori Loughlin. Unlike Huffman, however, she has pleaded not guilty. (More Felicity Huffman stories.)
