Memo to Georgia Sen. David Perdue: Your re-election fight might be an expensive one. That's because Democrat Jon Ossoff announced Tuesday that he is joining the race to unseat the first-term Republican, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If the 32-year-old's name sounds familiar, that's because Ossoff narrowly lost the most expensive House race in history, a Georgia special election in 2017 in which both sides spent a total of $55 million, per Politico. That Ossoff came so close to victory in a traditionally red state was seen as a hopeful sign for Democrats. The state hasn't elected a Democratic senator in about two decades.
“Georgia is the most competitive state in the country and the Senate majority will be decided in Georgia,” says Ossoff. He's already got a big-name endorsement in Rep. John Lewis. “Like the many thousands Jon has already organized and inspired, I am ready to work tirelessly to elect him,” said the longtime Georgia congressman. “Georgia and America need Jon.” Ossoff tells the AJC that his first act as senator would be to craft legislation to undo the Citizens United decision of the Supreme Court that loosened restrictions on corporate political donations.
