Home is where the heart is, and for people in certain parts of the US, where happiness reigns. WalletHub looked at more than 30 metrics for all 50 states, concentrating on three main categories: emotional and physical well-being (including career and social satisfaction, depression rates, and life expectancy); work environment, meaning such factors as commute times and how long people work each day; and community and environment, which examined safety, weather, and divorce rates, among other things. Where people are most often smiling: the Aloha State. Read on to see how the others ranked:

  1. Hawaii (No. 1 in the "Emotional and Physical Well-Being" category)
  2. Utah (No. 1 in the "Work Environment" category)
