A Minneapolis-area man posted what now appears to be a goodbye message online, took cops on a car chase he livestreamed through two towns, and then was shot to death by police when he finally exited his car with what looked to be a knife. The Star Tribune reports on the incident late Saturday, which began when cops in Edina started after a car they say had run a red light shortly after 10pm. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Brian Quinones, kept running lights and wouldn't pull over, leading police into his hometown of Richfield, about 5 miles away. While all this was going on, Quinones was livestreaming it on Facebook, calmly singing along to the radio and looking often into his rearview mirror at the squad car lights flashing behind him.
Then, about 12 minutes into the video, Quinones brought the car to a stop and jumped out, holding what seems to be a knife. After unintelligible screaming from the cops, multiple gunshots can then be heard. In his Facebook post right before he started recording, Quinones had simply posted "So sorry," leading some to wonder if he'd meant to provoke police gunfire that would take his own life. No officers from either city were injured, per a joint statement from the police departments. The AP notes that multiple police shootings have taken place in recent years in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, including that of Philando Castile, who was shot to death in July 2016 in Falcon Heights. In that case, there was also a livestream involved: Castile's girlfriend showed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook as it happened. (More police shooting stories.)
