Unable to find a new publisher, ThinkProgress is going dark. "We are left with no choice but to close ThinkProgress as an independent enterprise focused on original reporting," said Navin Nayak, of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, on Friday. The news website was an editorially independent project of the center, which is a Democratic Party think tank. ThinkProgress has been in the red for years, the Daily Beast reports. The center couldn't "continue supplementing the growing shortfall in ThinkProgress revenue," Nayak said. The site was put up for sale in July, per the Wrap.
The site, thinkprogress.org, will instead host postings from the center's scholars. ClimateProgress, which had merged with ThinkProgress, will be taken over by its founder, Joe Romm. A dozen employees are being laid off. Launching in 2005, ThinkProgress included original news reporting and an unyielding opposition to conservative ideals. Founder Judd Legum was critical Friday of the decision to shut down, per Fox News, tweeting, "It's disheartening that CAP no longer believes that independent progressive journalism is worth supporting."
