Publicly threatening mass murder tends to get people's attention—and Shane Kohfield learned his actions were no exception. The FBI used Oregon's new "red flag" law to take guns from the ex-Marine after he stood outside the Portland mayor's house in July with a megaphone saying he might "slaughter" antifa members, the Oregonian reports. "If antifa gets to the point where they start killing us, I'm going to kill them next," said the 32-year-old while wearing a large knife, body armor, and a MAGA cap. "I'd slaughter them and I have a detailed plan on how I would wipe out antifa." About two weeks later, the FBI stopped him as he left a famiy member's home and served the protection order. He wasn't charged with any crime.
But he was put under five-day psychiatric evaluation and volunteered to stay at Portland's VA hospital for two more weeks. He was also kept from attending an Aug. 17 Portland rally where right-wing activists and counterprotesters were expected to clash (it wasn't that bad). "I looked unhinged," admits Kohfield, who says he has PTSD and bipolar disorder. "I looked dangerous and have the training to be dangerous." But he said "the key to de-escalating the situation" was to be "the scariest person in the room." Seventeen states have now passed red flag laws allowing law enforcement to seize guns from people considered dangerous, per ABC News. In Oregon alone, judges have granted 98 such requests through July 2019. (An assault on a right-wing writer called attention to antifa.)
